Unemployed? Need some extra cash? Be a part of my team! Join Scentsy!

Jeez, that sounds like a midday infomercial. Or a spambot.  I know you’re thinking that this is probably some trick of mine to recruit you into some shady ponzi scheme.  As hokey as it sounds, if you are seriously looking for a way to make some decent money in the upcoming months, look no further than Scentsy Wickless Candles.

What the heehaw, Dariane? What in the world is Scentsy Wickless Candles? How do you even pronounce that?

Oh snap. Here comes the sales pitch:

Warmers & Scents

Warmers & Scents

Scentsy (pronounced scent-see) candles don’t have a wick, meaning they don’t have soot, smoke, or flame. Thus, they are much safer than regular candles. There are two parts to the typical Scentsy Wickless Candle: the warmer and the fragrance.  Scentsy has 80 different (AMAZING) fragrances to choose from, and 40 full-sized Scentsy warmers with various designs.

Fragrances come in bars, bricks, car candles (like air fresheners), room sprays, and travel tins.  Scentsy fragrance bars melt at a temperature that is safe enough to touch without getting burned, in case you have small kids and pets.  Along with the full-sized warmers, Scentsy also has a line of mid-sized warmers, plug-in warmers, and DIY design warmers.

In short, Scentsy is a better, safer alternative to regular candles.

Candles?! Why should I join and sell candles? Why is NOW the right time?

Well guess what, I’m about to drop some knowledge for ya.

1. It’s an awesome product from an awesome company.

Once you see the product and smell the fragrances, you’ll know that this is unlike anything you’ve seen on the market. And the company is driven by deeply set values. Don’t believe me? E-mail me so we can set up a date for you to smell fragrance samples and I can tell you about the time I personally met Scentsy executives.

2. Candles sell the most during the holiday season.

holiday09warmersThis one should really be a no-brainer as I’m sure you’ve experienced at least one member of your family or circle of friends light up some scented candles during the holidays. My mom joined Scentsy in November of 2008 and her business skyrocketed almost immediately. As soon as she shared a catalog with a friend, she would get more orders than she could handle (let alone anticipate). I know because I was the one managing inventory and helping make deliveries. It was NUTS.

3. The market for Scentsy candles in Los Angeles is virtually UNTAPPED.

To date, a large number of Scentsy consultants live in Utah, Idaho, Texas, the midwest, and rural/suburban areas.  With the Direct Selling/Multi-Level-Marketing model, this makes plenty of sense as these areas have strong community interaction.  To be in an urban area as a consultant, it’s not as easy to schedule parties.

The biggest change the company has made in the last couple of months that makes being a consultant in Los Angeles more viable is the improved website and online store. Now, when I’m asked if I have a website, I don’t have to shy away by giving them the address to my Geocities-looking Scentsy page. It’s all animated and web 2.0-looking. And did I mention the new and improved online store? In the Direct Selling industry, Scentsy is definitely the most tech savvy.

I live in West Los Angeles.  The last time I called in consultant support to ask about other local consultants I could collaborate with, I was told that there weren’t any.  In comparison, there must be at least a dozen Tupperware consultants, 10 Mona-Vie consultants, and about 50 or so Mary Kay or Avon Consultants. In the entire 90024 zip code, I am the ONLY Scentsy Consultant.

Wait, if there are so few consultants in LA why aren’t you making the big bucks? Why are you telling me to join? What’s in it for you Miss Dariane?

I joined Scentsy with most of the same reasons people have when entering a Direct Selling business: I need extra money for school and living expenses, Scentsy is a great product, and the amount of time and effort you put into the business is entirely flexible.  I also had the same doubts as many who encounter such businesses: what if this is a pyramid scheme, these types of businesses leave a sour taste in your mouth. I almost gave up on the whole thing altogether until I attended the annual Scentsy Convention held this year in Salt Lake City. After hearing a few speakers and speaking directly with some of the folks who work at the Scentsy Home Office (corporate), I realized that the company’s underlying values are at the heart of every employee and member of the Scentsy family, top to bottom.

As I mentioned earlier, I joined Scentsy to help supplement paying for school. But instead of milking the opportunity of being the only consultant in a dense community as Westwood, my time and energy got pulled away by school and other obligations. In short, I became (and in many ways still am) a very sucky Scentsy consultant.

I’m not gonna lie, if you join I’ll get a very small commission from what you sell. But the reality is, with the holiday season upon us it is simply impossible for me to reach consumers by myself.  I can’t do it alone.  Heck, I can barely do it at all.  I’m mentioning this to you because this is an opportunity for the taking, and there’s no better person to inform you about it than myself. ‘Tis the season to “warm the heart, enliven the senses and inspire the soul.” Spend time with wonderful people, share this wonderful product, and make some extra holiday cash. ‘Tis the Season to Join Scentsy!
